Sid Lahiri: Rajasthan Royals Cricket Academy's coach with an eye for talent

Image
By K.R. Nayar Sid Lahiri, the Rajasthan Royals Head of Academy Cricket Development, has groomed some of the rising stars in England. This cricketer-turned coach’s journey, which began in Kolkata, is an inspiring one. He has groomed England’s rising Test star Ollie Pope and now works closely with some of the best players in the  Rajasthan Royals'  team such as Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer, and Liam Livingstone. In his role as Head of Academy Cricket Development, he is set to create Rajasthan Royals cricket academies around the world. Sid Lahiri It was during the final of the Maxtalent Summer Cup Under-10 tournament on July 17, 2021, at Kent College, Dubai, that I met Sid Lahiri, who was the chief guest of the evening. What impressed me was his speech to the young cricketers where he said: “When we were all playing cricket at your age, we went out to bat to save our wicket.  Now we see that all of you go out to score runs, hit sixes and boundaries…. you have

Why is the Expo 2020 theme 'Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’ special and inspiring?

By K.R. Nayar The Expo 2020 theme 'Connecting Minds, Creating the Future' conveys a special message.  It is very important for minds to get connected and work together towards a better future for all. A look into factors behind many successful enterprises, missions, sports teams, and even countries, will reveal that this philosophy has played a big role in their success. On average, almost every day, I meet someone with whom I have never interacted before. That is the interesting part of being a reporter. When one goes in search of stories, one comes across different kinds of people from all walks of life. I have been fortunate to meet some amazing people and the kind of things they do to boost their passion has always surprised me. Then there are few who instantly strike a connection and the bonding gets stronger through regular interactions over the years.  The most interesting people are those who work towards creating a better future for others. As someone who covers s

A visit to a Pace Lab that guides fast bowlers on effective techniques through well researched scientific methods

Image
By K.R. Nayar There was a time when the term Lab or Laboratory was used only for scientific research. With technology playing a big role in the enhancement of performances in sports, labs are now being set up in every aspect of sport. So it was a unique experience to witness a Pace Lab organised by G Force Cricket Academy at the Velocity Sports and Recreation Club last week with Pachur Shukla, a Level-3 coach who specializes in shaping fast bowlers the right way. The knowledge that Shukla shared with the budding pacers were based on his in-depth study into the art of pace bowling. All youngsters who attended the pace lab would have returned richer in knowledge of the various techniques and motivated to work harder Coach Pachur Shukla measures the speed of a young pacer at the Pace Lab One of the most exciting sights in cricket is to see a fast bowler in full action. All legendary pacers are no doubt a treat to watch but to become a lethal and fearsome pacer and to get lauded is no

A Bahrain-based boy’s chase towards his dream of playing in the IPL and international cricket

Image
By K.R. Nayar This is an inspiring tale of a 14-year-old boy, Vishwaesh Gurumurthy, who, despite living in a country where cricket is still in its sprouting stage, has been chasing his dream of playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) player and international cricket. The enormous effort he has been putting in, backed by his father Gurumurthy, is an example on how dreams can be chased with determination. Gurumurthy, in addition to backing his son also has supported the creation of a High Performance Cricket Academy in Bahrain so that other children too can chase their dreams like his son Vishwaesh Gurumurthy in action Just because you grow up in a Gulf country where cricket is not as popular as in a Test cricket playing nation, one should not shy away from dreaming big and chase one’s goal. The legendary pacer Waqar Younis spent his earlier days in Sharjah, especially when cricket facilities weren’t as good as it is now here. Indian wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik did his schooling i
