A bakery that inspired cricketers closes down after 84 years

By K.R. Nayar For most of us, there would always be something that remains a nostalgic memory from our childhood days. In Trivandrum, where I spent all my early years of life, there was a small bakery called Santha Bakery, nestled in the heart of the city. It will always remain a cherished memory because every item sold here was delicious. For me, this bakery also played a motivational role in my journey as a cricket player and writer. The news of its closure after 84 years is now a painful reminder of its legacy.   Some of the former cricketers assemble bidding goodbye to their favourite bakery    Santha Bakery was more than just a place where I enjoyed cakes and puffs; it was a shop I revered. The three sons of P.M. Krishnan, the owner of the bakery, were brilliant cricketers—fearsome pacers, to be precise. P.M.K. Mohandas, P.M.K. Raghunath, and P.M.K. Premnath were renowned names those days. Mohandas was even mentioned by India’s legendary player E.A.S. Prasanna ...

My experience acting in the thriller movie Rekhachitram, set for global release on January 9

By K.R. Nayar For a cricket writer like me, accustomed to the glorious uncertainties of the game, the Malayalam movie  Rekhachitram , set to release on January 9, directed by Jofin T. Chacko and produced by Venu Kunnappilly, evokes a similar sense of unpredictability. Playing the role of a Bishop in this thriller, which has a nail-biting finish akin to an edge-of-the-seat cricket match, was special in many ways. This movie is the result of an enthusiastic and creative team's hard work, and it has already become the talk of the film world.   The trailer of  Rekhachitram  crossed two millions viewers  I shot for this small but significant role in  Rekhachitram  just before leaving for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the US and West Indies. Both experiences — acting in the film and witnessing India's historic World Cup victory — were highlights of the year for me. As  Rekhachitram  releases on January 9, I hope it will mark another spectacular...

Cricket Australia should be ashamed for ignoring Gavaskar during the Border-Gavaskar trophy presentation

Image
By K.R. Nayar Not inviting Sunil Gavaskar to the podium along with Allan Border to present the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia in Sydney was, quite frankly, not cricket. What makes this incident even more surprising is that Gavaskar was present on the ground as a commentator, yet only Allan Border was invited to the podium. This omission is not just a shameful act but also highlights Cricket Australia officials' lack of respect for the game's legends, their poor judgment, and ignorance.   The cricket board should have considered it an honor to have Gavaskar participate in the event. The presentation ceremony would have been far more memorable had both Border and Gavaskar jointly handed over the trophy. By considering only Border to present the trophy, Cricket Australia has left an indelible dark spot on the event. Gavaskar’s omission cannot be dismissed as a mere oversight. If it was an error, it reflects a shocking ignorance of who Gavaskar is as a cricketer. If it w...

Harbhajan Singh and Shoaib Akhtar as ambassadors of DP World ILT20 are special in many ways

Image
By K.R. Nayar The decision of DP World ILT20 to retain Harbhajan Singh as the ambassador for the third consecutive season, and to bring back Shoaib Akhtar after his memorable stint in Season 2, is commendable. These two cricketing legends are among the most vibrant personalities in the sport. Harbhajan Singh is more than just India’s legendary off-spinner, and Pakistan’s Akhtar is more than one of the fastest bowlers the game has ever produced. The third edition of the DP World ILT20 promises to be as exciting and colorful as these two icons were during their playing days, and continue to be as commentators.   Harbhajan Singh and Shoaib Akhtar in their usual joyful mood during the second edition Affectionately known as the "Turbanator" and the "Rawalpindi Express," Harbhajan and Akhtar retired with impressive records. Harbhajan claimed 711 wickets across all formats, while Akhtar took 444. Harbhajan used his craft and guile, whereas Akhtar relied on his fearsome...
