By K.R. Nayar Every bowler must have thought that they could easily bowl a maiden over to Raghvi Bist, but   it turned out to be a different story! In the touring G Force Cricket Academy versus Abhimanyu Cricket Academy match in Dehradun, a 18-year-old maiden won over everyone through her spectacular knock after opening the innings for Abhimanyu Cricket Academy and scoring an unbeaten 61 studded with six boundaries and a six against the boys.   Raghvi Bist ... a maiden who won over everyone through her skills  Watching her bat, my first impression was that it must be a boy with long hair. Her timing and the power with which she backed her strokes were immaculate. I was then informed that she was Uttarakhand women’s team’s opener and had once hit a double century. She was spearheading the chase towards G Force’s total of 134 for 6 made by the boys like opener Aditya Darak, who cracked 43, Neil Sidharth’s 23 and Manuj Kapil’s 21. Raghvi tried her best, but her team got restricted t

G Force Tour diary: Tale of eight-year-old Ashbel from Oman who sleeps with his pads on

Image
By K.R. Nayar We’ve heard of many who eat, drink and sleep cricket. But when a eight-year-old boy does this without anyone telling him, it is surely news worthy. There is so much passion for cricket in eight- year-old Ashbel Burboz that his father Wilson Burboz decided to enrol his son for the G Force Cricket Academy camp in Dehradun although they are based in Oman.   Eight-year-old Ashbel Burboz is an example of one who eat, drink and sleep cricket  The boy was like a squirrel moving all over the ground as if he had reached some heavenly place. He kept himself busy retrieving the ball hit by the batsmen at the nets without showing any signs of exhaustion. The drives he exhibited to the throws from coach Abhishek Saha seemed like they were out of a cricket coaching manual.   Speaking to the boy’s father Wilson Burboz convinced me that this boy literally eats, drinks, and sleeps cricket.   Ashbel with his father Wilson Burboz  “He wants to keep batting all the time. As soon as

G Force tour diary: Meet Manish Jha, Head Coach of the Uttarakhand team that is creating ripples in Indian cricket

Image
By K.R. Nayar Meeting successful coaches is always a pleasure. One gets to know how they transform teams into winners. It was informative and inspiring to meet with Manish Jha, Head Coach of Uttarakhand team during the G Force Cricket Academy’s tour of Dehradun at the Abhimanyu Cricket Ground.    Manish Jha... a coach who creates winners  Within a few minutes on talking to Jha it was evident why he is now considered among the finest coaches in India. He is creating waves with a team that has no superstars, but they are winning matches. This team got recognition from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) only four years ago, but they have been qualifying for the Ranji Trophy quarter- finals for the last three years defying teams that have been playing in this most prestigious Indian tournament for the last 50 years.   When asked on how he had managed to make this team so successful, he refused to take the credit. “All I did was to make them believe they are good eno
