UAE set to become the busiest cricket centre for the world’s top franchise leagues as they gear up to host the IPL, PSL, and three more leagues

The UAE will further stamp its authority as the world’s finest cricketing hub by becoming the most suitable venue for top franchise leagues around the world. Before hosting the Indian Premier League (IPL) in September-October this year, UAE is all set to host the Pakistan Super League (PSL) from June first week and is likely to stage the Afghanistan Premier League and Global T20 Canada League in addition to the scheduled Abu Dhabi T10 League.



UAE will once again prove that it is the most suitable cricket centre not only for the Indian Premier League (IPL) but for all the leading franchise leagues in the world today. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that the remaining matches of the 2021 edition of the IPL, which was being held in India and had to be stopped due to escalation of the Covid 19 pandemic, will now be held in between September and October this year. Prior to hosting the IPL, Abu Dhabi will be staging the Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches from the first week of June 2021.


It is also understood that the UAE has been approached to host the Afghanistan Premier League probably by the end of this year or early next year.  The Global T20 Canada League is also keen to host its event in the UAE soon.  

The fifth edition of the Abu Dhabi T10 tournament is scheduled to be held from November 19 to December 4, 2021.


Over the years, the UAE has always stepped forward to support cricket hosting nations whenever they have been unable to stage their events. This will be the third time that the IPL will be held in UAE. When India was holding its general elections in 2014, the UAE hosted the initial round matches of the seventh edition of the IPL here. In 2020, the 13th edition of the IPL was held entirely in the UAE due to lockdown in India following the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has earlier availed of the venues in the UAE to stage their international matches. UAE has also been the venue for the PSL right from its inaugural edition in 2015 till 2017 when the final was held in Pakistan.   The first and only edition of the Afghanistan Premier League was held at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in 2018, and the second edition is likely to return to the UAE.

The fifth edition of the Abu Dhabi T10 to be played by top international cricketers is being planned as the largest edition. The tournament organisers have increased the number of days of the event from 10 days in their fourth edition to 15 days in November 2021.


The UAE will be hosting 31 matches of the IPL in September-October while PSL’s 20 matches will be held in Abu Dhabi next month. One of the reasons that the UAE has impressed cricket-playing nations is the strict policies implemented by the government to contain the spread of Covid-19. As a commentator for the Afghanistan-Zimbabwe in Abu Dhabi, I experienced the bubble system that was strictly implemented here.

All these leagues are likely to be held without spectators unless the government decides to open doors to a restricted number of people to watch the event live from the stadiums.
