Lanka Premier League T20's Galle Titans to spread wings and aim to play in Dubai and Nepal leagues

Galle Titans, who are participating in the upcoming Lanka Premier League T20, 2023, have plans to extend their presence in more franchise league tournaments. Their brand owner, Nayana Wasalathilake, stated that the Titans aim to play in leagues held in Dubai and Nepal, while proudly representing Sri Lanka.

Formerly known as Galle Gladiators, the team hopes to make a significant impact in the forthcoming edition of the Lanka Premier League T20 taking place from July 30 to August 21.  The Galle Titans began their training on July 18. While elaborating on his plans for the future, Nayana Wasalathilake spoke about his desire to expand the Sri Lankan brand through the team since he wanted to give back to his country. He also expressed his pride in being a part of the franchise. As a successful businessman and a sports enthusiast, Wasalathilake also expressed his interest in supporting the development of volleyball and football.

 

Achintha Hewanayake, CEO of Galle Titans, stated that they have devised short and long-term strategies for the team. In the short term, their goal is to become champions of the LPL this year, while their long-term plan involves participating in more franchise leagues. Hewanayake emphasized on their focus towards building a team with a core of five or six players for the next five to seven years, supplemented by three or four young talents annually, with the primary aim of cricket development.

 


Furthermore, Galle Titans aim to promote sports in rural areas, particularly in the Uva province, as part of their outreach plan. Head coach Chamara Kapugedara expressed satisfaction with his team's combination for the tournament. He believes they have assembled a well-balanced side for the LPL 2023 auction and are prepared to excel in the upcoming edition. Kapugedara also expressed his intention to provide ample opportunities for young cricketers to secure a prosperous future.

In the auction, seven young as well as experienced Sri Lankan players earned substantial contracts, with Pakistan's legendary cricketer, Wasim Akram, representing the Kandy franchise during the bidding process.
