Enjoying the action with the Gems of the GEMS Millennium School, Sharjah

By K.R Nayar

It was a very special and enjoyable annual sports day at the GEMS Millennium School, Sharjah, as their Chief Guest. These events convince me time and again that the youth of today has tremendous potential that must be nurtured carefully, and I feel proud to be able to contribute my bit towards this.

The excitement is evident in the air as this day creates a special feel that stays etched in the memory of every student’s life.

Walking into a world where sports is revered

Those who excel realise how rewarding it is when their passion and hard work earns them honours, and those who competed but did not succeed understand how important it is to create the discipline and determination to the become the best.

Acknowledging the efforts of the teachers and coaches and the support from the parents

What made the GEMS Millennium 14th Annual sports day special was the manner in which it was conducted. It felt like one was walking into a world where sports is revered, and the boys and girls were bubbling with enthusiasm to display their skills whatever they had acquired.

The teachers, especially the coaches, made sure to emulate what one witnesses during the Olympics opening is presented well. The march past, lighting of the torch, and the oath taking where students pledge that the spirt of sports will be paramount, were all brilliantly staged.

I felt honoured to declare the sports meet open standing alongside Lini Shivaprasad, the Principal and CEO of the school, Sujatha Balasubramanian, vice principal, and Manoj Percy a member of Parent Teachers Association who took active interest is the conduct of the event.

In my speech, I reminded them that all legends were beginners like them, but it was their devotion, dedication and determination that made them greats in their field. The 100m sprint for boys and girls was thrilling, and the 4x100m relay got the crowd to stand up and cheer while watching the intense contest.  A large number of parents had also turned up, making the event a very exciting one.

After the overall trophy and the best athlete awards were presented, it was time for the boys and girls to celebrate. The cheers of those who could turn into sports gems of this millennium reverberated in my ears for a long time after I left the school.
