Flash from IPL Auction: Pat Cummins, Daryl Mitchell and Harshal Patel are the new millionaires

Dubai. The Indian Premier League which is well known to create millionaires continued to do so in their auction for the 2024 edition too. The new millionaires, within two hours after the start of the auction, are Pat Cummins, Daryl Mitchell and Harshal Patel.


The first millionaire of the day

Australia’s World Cup-winning captain, Pat Cummins, who silenced the Indians in the ICC World Cup 2023 final in Ahmedabad by lifting the World Cup, with a base price of INR 2 crore got sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad for a whopping INR 20.5 crore. Indian pacer Harshal Patel became the second millionaire of the day. Punjab Kings won Patel for INR 11.75 Crore. The third millionaire of the day was another World Cup hero Daryl Mitchell. He went to Chennai Super Kings for INR 14 crore.


The first player up for grabs was West IndiesT20I captain Rovman Powell. His base price was INR 1 crore. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) opened the bidding for Powell and then Rajasthan Royals jumped in Powell who captains Barbados Royals in the CPL. Rajasthan Royals got Powell for7.4 crore. Incidentally, Powell was  released by Delhi Capitals.


World Cup final hero Head for Hyderabad

Travis Head, the man who won the ICC World Cup 2023 for Australia through his player of  the match performance in  the final with a base price of Rs 2 Crore got sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for 6.8 crore.


Rachin Ravindra for Chennai

New Zealand’s ICC World Cup 2023 prolific scorer Rachin Ravindra had a base price of INR 50 lakh. A bidding war went on and got sold to Chennai Super Kings for INR 1.8 Crore. Chennai picked up Shardul Thakur too for INR 4 crore. Wanindu Hasaranga goes to SRH at INR 1.5 crore.

Afghanistan allrounder Azmatullah Omarzai with a base price of 50 lakh got sold to Gujarat Titans for the same amount. Gerald Coetzee will play for the Mumbai Indians who got sold for INR 5 Crores.  


Harry Brook will play for the Delhi Capitals (DC) for Rs 4 crore.  . Chennai picked up Shardul Thakur too for INR 4 crore. Wanindu Hasaranga goes to SRH at INR 1.5 crore.


Unsold

Rilee Rossouw remains unsold and so did Steve Smith of Australia. Former Karnataka and current Vidarbha batter Karun Nair. Another Karnataka player Manish Pandey with a base price of Rs 50 lakhs remains unsold. The other remaining unsold are
Philip Salt from England, Australia's Josh Inglis, Sri Lankan wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis.

Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Daniel Vettori addressing the press conference on why they went for Cummins.  “Someone else desperately wanted him as well, that’s why he got pushed to that high number. Because our team is relatively settled and we have the budget, and we have already picked up Travis Head and Hasaranga, we felt like we’d covered most things that we wanted at the auction, so we had the ability to spend that much.”

How the day began

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 Player Auction commenced. This richest cricket league will feature 333 cricketers who are scheduled to go under the gavel

What is happening 

The details of the auction are as follows out of 333 players, 214 are Indians and 119 are overseas players of which 2 players are from associate nations. The total capped players are 116, uncapped players are 215 and 2 from associate nations. A maximum of 77 slots are now available with up to 30 being slotted for overseas players.
