Harbhajan Singh and Shoaib Akhtar as ambassadors of DP World ILT20 are special in many ways
By K.R. Nayar
The decision of DP World ILT20 to retain Harbhajan Singh as the ambassador for the third consecutive season, and to bring back Shoaib Akhtar after his memorable stint in Season 2, is commendable. These two cricketing legends are among the most vibrant personalities in the sport. Harbhajan Singh is more than just India’s legendary off-spinner, and Pakistan’s Akhtar is more than one of the fastest bowlers the game has ever produced. The third edition of the DP World ILT20 promises to be as exciting and colorful as these two icons were during their playing days, and continue to be as commentators.

Affectionately known as the "Turbanator" and the "Rawalpindi Express," Harbhajan and Akhtar retired with impressive records. Harbhajan claimed 711 wickets across all formats, while Akhtar took 444. Harbhajan used his craft and guile, whereas Akhtar relied on his fearsome pace. Both were a sheer joy to watch, much like the DP World ILT20 has been over the past two seasons.
The third edition, scheduled from January 11 to
February 9, 2025, is set to reaffirm its status as the region’s premier T20
spectacle. To make it accessible to more fans, the organizers have introduced a
special offer of four tickets for AED 40 (general category only).
DP World ILT20 CEO David White, who has consistently ensured top-class facilities for the tournament, stated: “We’re thrilled to welcome back Harbhajan Singh and Shoaib Akhtar for DP World ILT20 Season 3. Their involvement continues to add immense value to the league. Season 2 was a huge success, with the competition and quality of cricket exceeding expectations. We’re looking forward to an even bigger and better tournament this year, and confident that this season will raise the bar further and enhance the growing reputation of UAE cricket on the international stage.”

Harbhajan is a true all-rounder, not only on the field but also as a person, known for his singing and dancing talents. His excitement about returning as an ambassador is evident in his statement: “Being part of the DP World ILT20 has been an incredible experience from the start, and each season gets better. Season 2 showcased exceptional T20 cricket, with competition pushing the boundaries of franchise cricket. What stands out to me is the rising talent in UAE cricket. This league is shaping the game’s future here. The January-February window, with the beautiful weather and festive buzz, makes the DP World ILT20 special for players and fans alike. I’m eager to see more young talent shine this season.”
Akhtar, a hero in his playing days, continues to
captivate audiences as a commentator. Reflecting on his return, he remarked: “It’s always a pleasure to return to the UAE where
I have fond memories from my playing days. Season 2 was an exciting display of
competitive cricket, and I believe the quality will only grow as the DP World
ILT20 evolves. This tournament not only showcases world-class talent but also
nurtures the next generation of players, which is vital for UAE cricket’s
future. I’m looking forward to another thrilling season.”
